Union takes first GSC win in five sets against UWA

JACKSON, Tenn.- Tonight, at the Fred Delay Gymnaisum, the Lady Bulldogs fought their way to their first GSC victory. After the match, Union's record sits at 3-14 (1-9 GSC) and UWA sits at 6-11 (2-8 GSC).

The first set was tightly contested by Union, opening with a kill from Ajahnaea Williams. The two sides went back and forth of who would hold the lead in the first several points. However, a 5-point streak for the Lady Tigers would ultimately put them ahead and allowed them to lead the rest of the match. Union tried to equalize, but they found themselves playing catch up the rest of the night. Lady Tigers take set one 25-22.

Lady Bulldogs stepped onto the court to set two with a spark. Natalie Supine and Parker Goff controlled the set collecting kills left and right. Marie Torosian also found her stride in this set, coming out of the woodwork and securing valuable points for Union. The two teams fought hard, pushing it to a 2-point game. Union was able to capitalize and take home set two at 28-26.

Set three opened with 4 straight points from Lady Tigers before the streak was ended by a kill from Goff. Once again, Union tried to catch back up but were unsuccessful, leaving the score at 25-16 in favor of West Alabama.

Union took control over the fourth set, knowing they needed to take it home if they wanted their first win. Lady Bulldogs opened the set with a kill from Elizabeth Gilbert. UWA continued to apply pressure, responding with kills of their own from KB Kinney and Klara Bobanova, but the Lady Bulldogs kept fighting. They finished the set at 25-18, forcing a fifth set.

Union went into the fifth set fired up. They scored eight points in a row, showcasing their resilience and fight. An attack error from UWA would put the match to bed 15-6 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs.

Game leaders Torosian, Gilbert, and Goff led the blitz in kills at 17, 16, and 12 respectively.  For Torosian, she collected her career high in kills. Assists came from Kylie Creech at 33, her new career high, and Sydney Davis at 16.

Supine had a great defensive night earning herself 7 blocks, a new career high.
