JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team posted its second shutout of the season with a 1-0 win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Union improved to 3-2-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH dropped to 5-3-2 on the season and 3-2-1 in league play.
Paige Blackburn's goal in the 84th minute proved to be the game-winner and lone goal of the match, giving Union the 1-0 victory. The goal was unassisted, but followed a shot from Rebekah Jackson.
In the early going, Union had the first real scoring opportunity when Jackson's shot hit the crossbar 22 minutes into the match. Union led in shots 10-6 in the first half. Shots on goal were at a premium, with only three shots on goal combined, two by Union in the first 43 minutes of play. However, Union had a chance late with a couple of shots on goal, but UAH's CeCe Szopa preserved the scoreless first half.
Lucia Garcia for Union led with three shots in the half, while UAH's Carley White had two for the Chargers.
UAH came out in the second half, getting 11 shots, but only three on goal. Union tallied nine second-half shots with seven on goal.
Union's Jackson led with six shots, three on goal. Garcia added five shots with four on goal. Dehlia Placie played all 90 minutes in goal with four saves in her second shutout of the season.
UAH was led by Gillespie and White with three shots each. Szopa played all 90 minutes in goal with nine saves.
Up next for Union will be the second GSC home match of the weekend, October 12 at 1 p.m., at the University of West Alabama.
