No. 17 Union stays hot with eight straight win, 81-60 at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. The Union University women's basketball team posted an 81-60 win at the University of Montevallo Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 19-3 overall and 17-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo dropped to 11-14 on the season and 11-10 in league play. 
The win for Union marked the eighth straight victory, the league's longest active winning streak. 
Montevallo took an early 5-2 lead, prior to Union's Lauren West hitting two 3-pointers to give Union an 8-5 lead. Union never trailed again and led 20-10 at the end of the first. 
A 3-pointer from Leah Church gave Union its largest lead of the half, 39-23, with 1:41 left in the half. Montevallo scored seven straight points to close the halftime deficit to 39-31. 
Montevallo got as close as six points a couple times in the third quarter, before Union pushed back out to a 55-45 lead heading into the fourth. Union dominated the fourth quarter 26-15, ending the game with its largest lead of 21 points, 81-60. 
Union was led by Shanique Lucas with 24 points. West finished with 12 points and pushed her double figures scoring streak to four games and five of the last six. Church finished with 12 points also. The Lady Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the field, 33 percent (11-33) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (18-24) from the foul line. 
Montevallo was led by Snodgrass and Flack with 11 points each. Edwards scored 10 points. The Falcons shot 38 percent from the field, 35 percent(10-29) from long range, and 62 percent (8-13) from the free throw line. 
Up next for Union will be the final home stand of the regular season, hosting Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama Thursday and Saturday, February 16 and 18.
