JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 80-67 win over Christian Brothers University Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium/David Blackstock Court. Union, ranked No. 24 in the WBCA Coaches Poll, improved to 15-3 overall and 13-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 10-10 on the season and 7-9 in league play.Â
Christian Brothers opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and a layup to lead 8-0. Union chipped away and rallied back and with 57 seconds left in the first quarter,
Leah Cauble's 3-pointer gave the Lady Bulldogs their first lead of the game, 18-17. Union led most of the second quarter, twice by six points including 36-30 after a 3-pointer from
Shanique Lucas with 58 seconds. CBU got a 3-pointer late in the half to set the halftime score at 36-33 Union.Â
Union opened the second half on fire, going on a 12-2 run including the first eight points of the third quarter. Union maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half. The biggest lead of the night for Union was 18 points, 80-62 late in the game.Â
Union outrebounded CBU 39-32 and also scored 32 points off of 21 CBU turnovers.Â
Shanique Lucas led Union with a game-high 28 points, a season-high for the senior and just four points shy of her career high. She added nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the game.
Samariah Thompson added 17 points and was 3-of-4 from the 3-point line.
Bethany Dillard added three from long range for nine points.
Shylee Morrison added nine points also. The Lady Bulldogs shot 40 percent from the field, 48 percent (14-29) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (12-16) from the free-throw line.Â
CBU was led by Jeremia Montgomery with 14 points. Emily Jones and Yaya Coleman added 13 each, while Chloe Crawford scored 12. The Lady Bucs shot 39 percent from the field, 43 percent (9-21) from long range, and 83 percent (20-24) from the foul line.Â
Up next will be two more home games next week when West Florida (Thursday) and Valdosta State (Saturday) come to Jackson.Â
