Union baseball splits with No. 21 Lee to open GSC play

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team opened up Gulf South Conference play against No. 21 Lee University Saturday, Feb 19 at Fesmire Field. The Bulldogs split with the Flames of Lee University winning the first game 5-4 and dropping the second game of the double header 1-5. Union moved to 5-4 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee University moved to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.

In the first game, scoring was sparce until Lee's bats came alive in the top of the fifth and sixth. They plated four runs in those two innings as Lee hoped out to a 4-0 lead. Union quickly answered back as Patrick Music scored on a ground ball hit by Grayson Swanson. Union scored two more in the sixth as Britt Netterville would score on a wild pitch, and Josh Bozoian scored on a double down the right field line by Jake Baker. The Bulldogs rallied in the ninth scoring two more as Carson Chavies scored on a sacrifice fly by Netterville and Trey Frierson came into score as Bozoian walked it off with a single into right field. AJ Zeak started on the mound for the Bulldogs, He threw 5.0 innings allowing five hits, one run, and two walks. Jack Rasmussen came into pitch in relief throwing 4.0 innings earning one strikeout, allowing six hits, three runs, and two free bases. Rasmussen would be credited with the win.

In the second game, Union struck first as Netterville hit a solo shot over the right field wall taking the lead after the first 1-0. Lee took control of the game after that scoring once in the third, twice in the fourth, once in the sixth, and their final run in the seventh. The final score of game two was Lee on top 5-1. Union had four hits in the second game all by four different players. Sam McMillin started on the mound for Union, He threw 5.0 innings earning three strikeouts. He allowed three hits, three runs, and four walks. Stuart Edge was first to come into relief, he threw 0.2 innings earning one strikeout, allowing one hit, one run, and two walks. Dylan Thomas also threw in relief, he threw 1.1 innings earning four strikeouts, allowing no hits, one run, and one walk.

Up next for Union is the final game of the three game series against Lee University. This game will take place Sunday, Feb 20 at 1:00 p.m. at Fesmire Field.
