Union volleyball sweeps first day of season in home tourney

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team opened the season Friday at home in the Union University Volleyball Invitational. Union rallied to defeat Lindenwood 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 25-17, 17-15) and then topped Florida Tech 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-10, 25-19). Union is 2-0, while Lindenwood is 1-1 and Florida Tech is 0-2. 

Union head coach Darrin McClure said, "Total team effort today. I am very proud of the way the team played and executed what we've worked on this preseason."

In the first match, Union was strong in the first set, hitting .481 to jump out to the 1-0 lead. Union finished the match with a .248 hitting percentage. In the match, Lindenwood led Union 75-51 in kills, but it was Union's block that won the match. Union out blocked Lindenwood 17-3 in the match. Union also was solid in the serve, getting 13 service aces in the match. Union was led by Alyssa Tatsch with 15 kills and added a solid stat line of nine digs, five blocks, and an ace. Ainsley Hartman led with 22 assists, while Jordan Vick added 12 assists. Laura Rose Gray recorded eight blocks, while Emily Grace Calhoon added five. Sydney Sample had 16 digs and Reese Owens recorded 13 digs. 

In the match against Florida Tech, the Panthers fought through a took the first set after hitting .308. Union rallied to hit .483 and .500 in the second and third sets to dominate play. Union won 25-10 in both the middle sets. Union pulled away in the fourth set to seal the win. Union led Florida Tech in all the main stat categories including kills (56-38), aces (8-5), blocks (6-3), assists (45-33), and digs (65-42). Tatsch was tops in kills with 14 followed by Haley Ramsey with 11 and Gray with nine. Bailey Hughes led with four aces, followed by Tatsch with three. Tatsch led with four blocks while Vick led with 41 assists. Sample and Owens led with 16 digs each.  

Up next for Union will be two more matches in the invitational at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union plays Lane at 1:15 and then Truman State at 7:30.
