Union men's soccer advances to GSC Semifinals with win over Lee

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 3-1 win at home against Lee University Sunday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series Tournament Quarterfinals. Union improved to 4-1 overall. Lee ended its season at 1-2-2. 

The Bulldogs explosively opened the game will a goal from William Valencia just 35 seconds into the match. Valencia's shot fired past the Lee goalkeeper and into the upper left corner. Gavin Scott then doubled Union's lead with just 49 seconds left in the half. Scott's goal was assisted by Jacob Phelps and Kenny Nitzsche. The 2-0 score held at the half. 

Lee started the second half the way Union started the first, with a goal just 44 seconds into the half. Mattia Balzano scored for the flames, assisted by Jared McWhorter. Valencia added an insurance goal for the Bulldogs in the 61st minute when he scored on a header. Alpay Altuntas assisted on the goal. 

Union led Lee in shots 10-7, and in shots on goal 6-3. Union also had 13 corner kicks to Lee's five. 

The Bulldogs were led by Valencia with four shots, all on goal. Scott and Mats Fredriksen each logged two shots, while AJ Morgado and Billy Grogan each had one. Botond Nemeth played all 90 minutes in goal for Union and had two saves. The assists from Phelps, Nitzsche, and Altuntas were the first of the season for each player. 

Lee was led by Borja Gaspar with two shots. Five other players each logged one shot for the Flames. Sam Keener played the entire match in goal and made three saves. 

Up next, Union will play the University of West Alabama (Group A, No. 4 seed) in the semifinal round of the GSC Spring Championship Series tournament Saturday, March 27. The location and time of the game are to be announced.
