Union men's soccer advances to GSC SCS final with 2-1 win over West Alabama

MILAN, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 2-1 win over the University of West Alabama Sunday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series Tournament Semifinals. Union improved to 5-1 overall while West Alabama ended its season at 4-4-1. The game was played at Milan High School's Johnnie Hale Stadium due to extensive rain in Jackson over the weekend.

After a scoreless first half, Stan De Vries put Union on the board when he scored on free kick in the 57th minute. The goal was De Vries' second of the season. Gavin Scott scored his fourth goal of the season in the 66th minute to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. William Valencia earned his second assist of the season on the play. Less than a minute later, West Alabama's Vince Stans converted a penalty kick to cut the lead in half. The 2-1 score held for the remainder of the match. 

West Alabama led Union in shots 13-11, but Union led in shots on goal 5-4. West Alabama had 8 corner kicks to Union's 4. 

The Bulldogs were led by De Vries with six shots, two on goal. Mats Fredriksen logged two shots, while Scott, Valencia, and Jorge Gutierrez each had one. Botond Nemeth played all 90 minutes in goal for Union and had two saves. 

West Alabama was led by Stans with two shots. Hugo Courchinoux had three shots, while Reda Ikarrain had two. Jules Dechert played the entire match in goal and made three saves. 

Up next, Union will play Christian Brothers University (Group A, No. 3 seed) in the championship game of the GSC Spring Championship Series tournament Saturday, April 3 at 4:00 p.m. at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama.
