Union volleyball tripped up in road loss at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Union University volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) at the University of West Georgia Friday night. Union dropped to 17-12 overall and 8-5 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia improved to 13-14 on the season and 7-7 in league play. 
West Geogia evened the season series after Union won the earlier meeting at home, 3-1. 
The first set was full of runs, starting with a 9-2 start by West Georgia. Union rallied to cut the deficit to 14-12. However, UWG answered with a 7-0 run to regain control. Union did not go away, scoring six of the next seven points, but it was not enough as West Georgia scored the final three points for the win. 
Union managed to push out to a 19-15 lead in the second set after close play to that point. West Georgia rallied and scored 10 of the last 12 points, including five straight at the end of the set. 
The third set was almost identical to the second. After back-and-forth play, Union used a 5-0 run to push out to a 20-16 lead. The two teams swapped points, putting Union up 21-17. However, West Georgia used one final run, and 8-0 burst to rally and take the final set 25-21. 
West Georgia outhit Union .203 to .117, led in kills (46-30), aces (4-1), assists (40-24), and digs (57-53). Union and West Georgia tied with four blocks each. 
Union was led by Emily Grace Calhoon with nine kills, Greta Blakemore with one ace, Calhoon with two blocks, Jordan Vick with 20 assists, and Sydney Sample with 25 digs. 
Up next for Union will be a road match at Valdosta State, November 7 at 12 noon central time.
