SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Union University women's basketball team, ranked No. 16/24 in the WBCA/D2SIDA national rankings, topped Truman State University 67-60 Friday afternoon in the Drury Thanksgiving Classic. Union improved to 3-1 on the season, while Truman State dropped to 2-3 on the season.Â
In a low contest, Union used good shooting to earn the narrow neutral site victory, especially in the second half. Union shot 65 percent in the second, including 3-of-4 in the second half from 3-point range.Â
Union led 16-12 after the first quarter and was up 29-23 at the half. Union had leads of 10 points in both halves, including a 10-point advantage with 7:23 left in the third quarter following an
Emily Beard Dunnagan 3-pointer to put Union up 36-26. However, Truman State roared back, outscoring Union 21-17 in the third quarter.Â
Following a 13-0 run, Truman State took its first lead since 3-0 and led 39-36 with 3:33 left in the quarter. Union stopped the rally and by the end of the third, had regained the lead 46-44.Â
Union opened the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 12 points, 56-44. Counting the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth, Union scored 16 straight points.Â
Truman State kept it close, getting to within five points late, but falling 67-60.Â
Nine Union players scored in the game including three in double figures.
Jaelencia Williams led with 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists, all team highs.
Shanique Lucas added 14 points and
Ashtyn Baker scored 13 points. Union finished the game shooting 55 percent from the field, 55 percent (6-11) from 3-point range, and 54 percent (7-13) from the free throw line.Â
Truman State was led by Maddie Re with 15 points, Hannah Balanger with 14 points, and Elli Weltha with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 42 percent from the field, 33 percent (8-24) from long range, and 67 percent (6-9) from the free throw line.Â
