Union volleyball tops MC 3-0 for fourth straight victory

CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-13) Saturday morning on the road. Union improved to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 5-7 on the season and 3-4 in league play.

The win for Union is its fourth straight victory. All four coming in straight sets.

Emily Grace Calhoon led Union with 13 kills, hitting a very impressive .650 in the match. Calhoon added a team high two aces and a block. Sydney Sample led with 20 digs while Jordan Vick had 32 assists.

Calhoon also surpassed 500 career kills in the match.

Union head coach Darrin McClure said, "It is pretty fitting that Emily Grace (Calhoon) got her 500th kill on a day like today. She played so well, actually, has been all year. She is such a great player and the cool thing is she is still getting better. I can honestly say she is such a team player that she would rather us talk about th wins and the role that others played today. That is what makes her so great and why her teammates play so hard with her."

In the first set with the score tied 5-5, Union scored four straight points as a part of a 9-2 run to pull away. The second set was back and forth all the way. Union led 24-21 at set point but allowed MC three straight points to tie the set. Union scored the final two points including a kill from Alyssa Tatsch to take a 2-0 lead. The third set was all Union, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and never looking back. Union posted a 9-1 run along the way to a three-set sweep.

Union led in all major stat categories including kills (41-35), hitting percentage (.398-.115), aces (5-5), blocks (10-2), assists (39-31), and digs (49-36).

Up next for Union will be a non-conference hope match, Monday, October 11 at 6 p.m. versus Ouachita Baptist.
