Union volleyball gets third straight victory, 3-0 at CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-11) win at Christian Brothers University Tuesday night. Union improved to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 2-16 on the season and 0-6 in league play. 

The win for Union is the third straight, all in three sets victories. Union also swept the season series with CBU, opening GSC play September 21 with a 3-0 home win over the Bucs. 

Union opened the first set with a quick 4-1 lead, but the set was back-and-forth most of the way. Christian Brothers held its final lead at 15-14. After a tie at 19-19, Union took the lead for good, scoring six of the final eight points of the set. 

Except for early 2-1 and 3-2 leads by CBU, Union led for the rest of the second set. Union's largest lead of the set was seven points at 24-17. 

In the third set, CBU held a 5-4 lead early, but again, Union took control. This time, in dominating fashion. Union scored six straight points to gain control at 10-5. Later in the set, Union posted an 8-0 run to lead 21-9, coasting to the three-set win. 

Union led in all major categories except for aces, in which CBU led 6-4. Union led in kills (42-33), blocks (7-0), assists (38-31), and digs (38-28). 

Union was led by Laura Rose Gray with 18 kills and Emily Grace Calhoon with 12 kills. Haley Ramsey and Greta Blakemore led with two aces each. Rose and Calhoon led with three blocks each, while Jordan Vick led with 37 assists. Ramsey and Sydney Sample led with 11 digs each. 

Up next for Union is another GSC road match, Saturday, October 9 at Mississippi College at 10 a.m.
