MOBILE, Ala.- The Union University women's soccer team defeated Spring Hill College Sunday afternoon. Union improved to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Spring Hill fell to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in league play.
For the third time in the past four games, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead within the first five minutes of play. Annika Weidner scored her third goal of the season in the fifth minute of play. Rivers Abshere scored in the 44th minute, the eventual game winner, giving Union a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Abshere's goal was assisted by Ava Duval. The Lady Bulldogs had a dominant first half and out shot the Badgers 12-1.
Spring Hill's Sophie Bailey cut Union's lead in half in the 54th minute. The Lady Bulldogs responded 10 minutes later with a goal from Matilda Nyberg, assisted by Abigial Langston. With less than three minutes left in the game, Duval added a goal of her own, assisted by Ella Neely, to set the final score at 4-1.
Union out shot Spring Hill 19-7 and 8-4 in shots on goal. Bryson Lee made one save in 77 minutes of work. Rylee Iorio had two saves in the final 13 minutes.
Weidner and Taylor Knight led Union with four shots each, Nyberg and Grace Rodriguez added two shots each, and seven other Lady Bulldogs all logged one shot.
The Lady Bulldogs are back in action at home Friday, October 8 against the University of Alabama in Huntsville at 5 p.m.
