Union volleyball gets key road win at Auburn Montgomery, 3-1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Union University volleyball team posted win at the University of Auburn Montgomery Friday night 3-1 (25-21, 15-25, 25-23, 25-23). Union improved to 16-10 overall and 7-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn Montgomery dropped to 15-11 on the season and 6-4 in league play. 

In the win, Union junior Emily Grace Calhoon became Union's NCAA D2 era leader in career blocks. She needed three blocks to take over the record and earned four in the match, giving her 259 career blocks. She passed Christa Karns D2 era record of 257. 

Union and AUM entered the match even in GSC play, tied for fourth place. Union now moves into sole possession of fourth place with three losses. Alabama Huntsville and Shorter are tied for second with two losses each. Saturday's opponent for Union, West Florida is leading the way at 11-0 and ranked No. 8 in the nation. 

Union held a slim lead most of the first set. AUM's last lead was 19-18. Union scored three straight points to take control and closed out the set with a 7-2 run for the win. 

AUM dominated the second set. Union scored first on a kill from Calhoon, but AUM took the lead for good at 3-2 and never looked back. 

Set three was again very close with the Warhawks holding a slim lead for most of the first half of the set. Union had a narrow lead for most of the second half of the set. AUM tied the set 23-23, but Union got the next two points to win the set, the last point coming on a block from Calhoon.

The fourth set was close all the way. Union's Jordan Vick got a kill to tie the set at 21-21. The set was tied again at 22-22, when Union scored two straight points capped by a kill from Laura Rose Gray. After a Union service error made the score 24-23, AUM followed with a service error to give Union the match winning point. 

AUM led Union in kills (63-46), assists (62-44), and digs (77-63). Union led AUM in aces (6-2) and blocks (9-5). AUM led Union in hitting percentage (.270-.186). AUM posted 10 service errors in the match.

Union was led by Calhoon with 15 kills and Gray with 12 kills. Haley Ramsey and Sydney Sample each led with two aces. Calhoon led with four blocks and Vick led with 38 assists. Sample led with 21 digs, while Bailey Hughes added 17 digs. 

Up next for Union will be another road match, Saturday, October 30 at No. 8 West Florida at 2 p.m.
