JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team lost to the University of Alabama in Huntsville 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-20) Friday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union dropped to 13-7 overall and 5-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville improved to 12-6 on the season and 6-2 in league play.
The loss snapped a five-match winning streak for Union.
The first set was back and forth all the way. Union led 21-19 late, but UAH scored six of the final seven points to take set one. The second set was close early. Union trailed just 11-10, but UAH posted a 7-1 run to take control and cruise to the set two win, 25-14. The third set was another close set. Union kept it close and rallied back numerous times. UAH led 20-15, but Union scored four straight and five of the next six to trail 21-20. However, the Chargers closed out the match with four straight points.
UAH led Union 45-27 in kills, in hitting percentage (.267-116), aces (10-3), blocks (8-6), assists (29-23), and digs (40-34). Union was led by
Laura Rose Gray and
Emily Grace Calhoon with seven kills each.
Reese Owens added six kills. That same trio led Union with three blocks each.
Bailey Hughes led with two aces,
Jordan Vick with 20 assists, and
Haley Ramsey with eight digs. Union starting libero,
Sydney Sample did not play in the match.
Up next for Union will be a home match, Saturday, October 16 at 2 p.m. versus Montevallo.
