Union volleyball tops West Georgia 3-0

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team posted a sweep over the University of West Georgia 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-22) Friday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 7-6 on the season and 1-3 in league play. 

Union stormed out to an early lead 19-9 in the first set. When it seemed Union was coasting to a win, West Georgia stormed back to tie the set at 24-24. Union got a kill from Emily Grace Calhoon and an attack error from the Wolves to score the final two points and win set on. 

Set two was back and forth for the entire set, with neither team leading by more than three points. However, the ending was much the same as the first. With the set tied 24-24, Union got kills from Calhoon and Laura Rose Gray to win 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead. 

In the final set, Union led by as many as five points, 16-11, before West Georgia tied the set at 16-16. The teams went back and forth, both having leads of one point a few times down the stretch. With West Georgia leading 22-21, Union rattled off four straight points, including kills from Greta Blakemore and Alyssa Tatsch to earn the win. 

West Georgia edged Union 48-47 in kills, but Union held slim margins in aces (4-3), blocks (6-4), assists (42-41), and digs (62-57). 

Union was led by Calhoon with 11 kills, while Gray and Tatsch added nine and eight kills respectively. Jordan Vick led with two aces and 34 assists, while Calhoon led with four blocks. Sydney Sample led with 22 digs. 

West Georgia's Harris and White also had 11 kills each, with Buchanon getting 10 kills. 

Up next for Union will be another home match, Saturday, October 2 at 2 p.m. versus Valdosta State.
