MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Union University baseball team posted a doubleheader split at the University of Montevallo Saturday afternoon. Montevallo took game one 4-3 in 10 innings, while Union salvaged the final game of the three game series, 5-0. The Bulldogs moved to 8-12 overall and 3-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo is now 11-9 one the season and 5-7 in league play.
In the win, Union received a much needed complete game shutout effort from starting pitcher,
Brandon Maxwell (1-1). Maxwell tossed seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Offensively, Union got a run in the first on an
Austin Zeitler RBI single. Union added a run in the fifth and three more in the seventh. It was Zeitler again in the seventh, this time a 2-RBI single capped the scoring. Zeitler led Union with a 3-for-4 day and three RBI.
In game one, Union scored first in the first without the use of a hit. With runners on first and third, Union executed a double-steal to get on the board first. Montevallo took the lead with two runs in the second. Union regained the lead in the sixth with two runs.
Josh Bozoian had an RBI single, while
Noah Dominguez followed with a sacrifice fly. The Falcons tied the game in the eighth with a run and then scored the winner in the tenth on a wild pitch.
Walker Adkisson started and went seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Sam McMillin (0-1) tossed the final 2.2 innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts, four walks, three wild pitches, and a hit batter. Union had six hits in the game from six different players. Union did not get its first hit until the sixth when Union had four in the inning.
Up next for Union will be a home non-conference game, Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. versus Harding University.
