CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University softball team posted a 2-0 win in the rubber game of a three game weekend series at Mississippi College. Union improved to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College, who is receiving votes in the most recent NFCA Coaches' Poll, dropped to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Union continued its good start to the GSC season, going 2-1 in both of the series to open league play, both against teams ranked or receiving votes.
In today's game, senior pitcher
Gabby Morris completed an outstanding weekend. In the 2-0 win, Morris (7-1) posted a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit. She also drove in both of Union's runs at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, a run, a walk, and a home run. Morris' 2-run homer came in the fourth inning, driving in
Grace White.
Peyton Mathis and
Kristen Pickens had one hit each, for the remainder of Union's hits.
Union lost the first game of the series, 2-0. But then Morris tossed her first complete game of the weekend in a 4-0 win. For the weekend, Morris was 2-0 in 14 innings, allowing no runs on just three hits with 19 strikeouts. She was also 4-for-8 in the series with two home runs and five RBI.
Up next for Union will be a home non-conference doubleheader versus LeMoyne-Owen College, March 4 at 2 p.m.
