ROME, Ga. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 88-68 win over Shorter University Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 15-7 overall and 9-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 3-19 on the season and 0-12 in league play.
Shorter scored the first four points of the game but the lead was quickly gone after a few Union baskets by
Tyree Boykin and
Terrandus Smith. It was a back and forth affair for the rest of the first half. The largest lead of the first half was a 10 point lead by Shorter with 7:08 left. The first half ended with Shorter up one, 33-32.
Union regained the lead and pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 26 points, 88-62, with 49 seconds left. Union cruised to the 88-68 final.
Union outrebounded Shorter 35-32. Union also edged Shorter in shooting percentage 47% (31-66), to 42.9% (24-56).
Union was led by Boykin with 28 points and
Terrandus Smith with 21 points and eight rebounds. Brothers
Ousmane Gueye and
Samory Gueye added 11 points each, Ousmane with five rebounds, and Samory with four. Union shot 47 percent from the field, 46 percent (16-35) from three, and 91 percent (10-11) from the free throw line.
Shorter was led by Wilson with 24 points and Lilaj with 15 points. The Hawks shot 42 percent from the field, 29 percent (7-24) from 3-point range, and 81 percent (13-16) from the free throw line.
