CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 79-50 win at the University of West Georgia Thursday night. Union improved to 17-4 overall and 11-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 13-6 on the season and 6-5 in league play.
Head coach
Mark Campbell and the Lady Bulldogs put together a defensive performance that held the GSC's top offensive team to just 50 points. Just a week earlier, Union slipped by West Georgia 83-80 at home.
West Georgia led by as many four points, 19-17, before Union cut it to 19-17 after the first quarter of play The game was dominated by Union in the final three quarters. Union outscored West Georgia 20-8 in the second quarter to lead 37-27 at the half. Union outscored UWG 42-23 in the second half, including 25-12 in the third quarter. Union's largest lead of the game was 79-49 late in the contest.
Freshman guard
Shanique Lucas finished with her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard
Emily Beard added 17 points with five 3-pointers. Beard surpassed 500 career points in the win.
Jada Smith led all scorers with 19 points. She posted a great stat-line adding nine rebounds, six assists, and no turnovers.
Jacie Higgins and
Jaelencia Williams added nine rebounds. Union shot 44 percent from the field, 29 percent (8-28) from 3-point range, and 85 percent (11-13) from the free throw line.
West Georgia was led by Bankston and Dooley with nine points each. The Wolves shot 24 percent from the field, 24 percent (9-38) from long range, and 64 percent (9-14) from the free throw line.
Union out rebounded West Georgia 56-37.
Union continues the road trip Saturday, February 1 at Shorter, at 1 p.m.
