JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 97-49 win over Shorter University Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 16-4 overall and 10-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 1-15 on the season and 1-10 in league play.
Union took control early, taking a 20-8 lead after the first quarter. Union had its best quarter of the day in the second, scoring 30 points to lead 50-24 at the half.
Union's largest lead of the game was 51 points in the final minute, 97-46, before taking the 97-49 final. Union outrebounded Shorter 58-32 in the game, including 16-9 offensively.
Union put six players in double figures led by
Jaelencia Williams with 17 points.
Shanique Lucas,
Jacie Higgins, and
Leah Cauble each added 15 points,
Sadie Knee scored 14, and
Jada Smith added 11 points. Smith also dished out a career-high 11 assists to complete the double-double. Union shot 50 percent from the field, 55 percent (12-22) from 3-point range, and 69 percent (9-13) from the free throw line.
Shorter was led by Fuller with 14 points. Gaines added 12 and Bolden scored 11 points. The Lady Hawks shot 26 percent from the field, 24 percent (7-29) from long range, and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.
