JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 97-64 over Shorter University Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 13-7 overall and 7-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 3-16 on the season and 0-11 in league play.
Union scored the first five points of the game and maintained the lead for the rest of the afternoon. Back-to-back three-pointers from
Cooper Meadows and
Tyree Boykin pushed Union's lead to double figures for the first time, 15-3 with 15:37 left in the half. Shorter cut the deficit to single digits one last time, 19-10, but a 3-pointer from Tylandruis Parks pushed the advantage back to double figures for good. Union led by as many as 18 points in the first half, before taking a 44-27 lead into the locker room.
Union continued to pull away in the second half, leading by as many as 31 points, 78-47, with 7:42 left. Union cruised to the 97-64 final.
For the 12th time this year, Union hit at least 10 3-pointers in a game, moving its record to 11-1 in those games.
Union outrebounded Shorter 52-34, including 13-7 offensively.
Union was led by Boykin with 18 points and
Cooper Meadows with 17 points, both hitting three 3-pointers.
Terrandus Smith and Parks each added 13 points. Parks was perfect from the field, including 5-of-5 from the field, 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and 1-of-1 from the free throw line. Meadows led with eight rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 51 percent from the field, 31 percent (10-32) from long range, and 68 percent (15-22) from the free throw line.
Shorter was led by Lilaj with 19 points and Walker with 16 points. The Hawks shot 35 percent from the field, 26 percent (7-27) from 3-point range, and 60 percent (15-25) from the free throw line.
