Union men's soccer gets golden goal in first OT to edge Spring Hill 1-0

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 1-0 overtime win over Spring Hill College Friday night. Union improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Spring Hill dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. 

After 90 minutes of scoreless play, Union went to overtime for the second straight game. The first ended with a 1-0 heart-breaker to AUM in the conference opener. However, tonight was Union's turn to record the golden goal. Just on second into the 97th minute of play, Union took possession and had the numbers advantage when Mats Fredriksen returned the ball to Gavin Scott and Scott drilled a shot into the back right corner of the net for the win. 

Spring Hill edged Union 6-4 in first half shots, but dominated the second half, out-shooting Union 12-4. Shots were even at 1-1 in the first overtime. SHC out-shot Union 19-9 in the match, including 12-6 in shots on goal. 

William Valencia led Union with three shots in the game. Euan Morton recorded 12 saves in his 96:01 minutes of shutout work in goal. 

Up next for Union will be a matchup versus No. 11 West Florida, September 29 at 3:15 p.m. at home.
