JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team rallied in all three sets won to defeat Trevecca Nazarene University 3-2 (28-26, 26-24, 23-25, 19-25, 15-11). Union improved to 5-3 on the season, while Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 7-3 overall.
The first set was close with Union pulling out to a five point advantage, 19-14. After a TNU timeout, the Trojans mounted a rally that tied the set up at 22-22. Union trailed at set point 25-24 and again at 26-25. Union scored the set's final three points to get the win.
Set number two was more of the same back-and-forth action. Union pushed its lead to 15-12 and forced a TNU timeout. The Trojans again responded to lead 17-16. Union grabbed the lead back at 18-17, but fell down again 20-18, leading to a timeout. Union scored three of the next four points to lead briefly at 20-19. But TNU regained the lead and pushed out to set point, 24-22. Just like the first set when Union faced set point, the Lady Bulldogs rallied back to even the set. Union went up set point, 25-24, and won the set on a TNU ball-handling error.
The third set started with a 7-1 lead for the Trojans. Union got as close at two points but TNU matched its largest lead of six points at 12-6 and 14-8. Union slowly chipped away, cutting the deficit down to just one point, 19-18, forcing a TNU timeout. After a point by TNU, Union scored twice to tie the set at 20-20 and then again at 21-21. For the third straight set, TNU was first to set point, 24-22. This time, Union was not able to rally, with TNU winning 25-23.
In the fourth set, it was Union jumping out to the early lead 5-1. However, TNU stormed back to lead 8-5 and force a UU timeout. Trevecca Nazarene led by five points several times in the set, before taking its largest lead of 24-18 for set point for the fourth time in the match. TNU closed out the set 25-19 to even the match at 2-2.
The deciding fifth set was close early with Trevecca Nazarene taking the 8-6 lead at the switch. Union tied the game at 10-10. Union extended its lead to 13-11 to force a TNU timeout. Union pushed to match point at 14-11 and a kill from
Emily Grace Calhoon gave Union the 3-2 match victory.
Union hit .245 in the set, while Trevecca hit. 281. TNU led Union 65-62 in kills, 11-8 in aces, and 8-4 in blocks. Union led 71-56 in digs.
Union was led by
Meghan Delaney with 16 kills, while
Haley Ramsey and
Emily Grace Calhoon added 11 each.
Jordan Vick led with three aces, Ramsey and Calhoon led with two blocks each, Vick with 40 assists, and
Abbie Rahn with 24 digs.
Up next for Union will be three matches the Union Volleyball Classic Friday and Saturday, September 20-21. Nine games over two days with Union playing at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, and 2 p.m. Saturday. Matches start at 11 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
