Union women's soccer rallies for 2OT win over Florida Southern in season opener

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Union University women's soccer team posted a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Florida Southern College in the first day of the Delta State University Classic. Union is now 1-0 on the year.

Union head coach Scott Sinclair said, "We started off exactly how we wanted to and then we made a mistake and found ourselves down a goal against a very good Florida Southern team. So the important thing was for us to respond in a positive way. The girls were tremendous. You just look at how they competed in the second half. We battled hard. We denied Florida Southern opportunities at goal and created some good looks for ourselves. I could not be prouder of the response this group showed. The team showed the character, heart, and the grit that this group of young ladies have."

Union and Florida Southern played a scoreless first half. FSC took the lead early in the second half in the 50th minute of play. With the score still 1-0, and under 12 minutes left to play, Union's Addison Dunn tied the match in the 79th minute. Regulation ended with the score 1-1.

After a scoreless first overtime, it was the Jackson, Tenn. native (USJ), Dunn, who struck again with a goal three minutes into the second overtime. Jaya-Naomi Wilson dished out the assist on the game winning goal.

Florida Southern out shot Union 16-5 in the game, including 10-5 in shots on goal. FSC led 8-0 in shots in the first half. Union managed four shots in the second half and one shot in the second overtime. Dunn led with two shots.

Anna Venckus recorded nine saves in the 103 minutes in net for Union.

Up next for Union will be September 15 at 11 a.m. versus Florida Tech in the final day of the DSU Classic.
