LEBANON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team fell 5-3 at Cumberland University Friday afternoon. Union dropped to 1-1 on the season, while Cumberland improved to 4-1.
In both matches this season, Union has scored first, this time in the 12th minute.
Gavin Scott put Union on top, assisted by
William Valencia. The lead did not last long as tied the match just under a minute later. Two more goals in the first half by Cumberland (19th and 21st minute), gave the Phoenix a 3-1 halftime lead.
The score stayed 3-1 until Cumberland gain struck with two goals in just two minutes for the second time in the match. A goal in the 71st minute followed by a goal in the 73rd minute put the Phoenix up 5-1. At the time it did not seem like meaningful goals, but Union responded.
James Jackson scored twice for the Bulldogs, first in the 86th minute, assisted by Scott, then tacked on another in the 88th minute to cut the deficit to 5-3. Cumberland was able to stop Union's late flurry to earn the win.
Euan Morton earned one save in his 90 minutes of work, while Nicklas Rulle had one save also. Cumberland out shot Union 16-7 in the game, with a much smaller advantage, 6-5 in shots on goal. Scott led Union with two shots.
Up next for Union is another road non-conference match at Drury (Mo.) University September 15 at 2:30 p.m.
