CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Union University softball team lost conference series to the University of West Georgia 8-2, 5-4, and 3-2 in the final game. The Lady Bulldogs are now 12-15 in the Gulf South Conference and 25-22 on the season. The Wolves are now 12-15 in conference play and 26-25 overall.
The Wolves scored four runs in the second inning of the first game on Friday. A single from Haley Barnette scored two for the Lady Bulldogs in the top of the fourth. West Georgia racked up four more runs to finish the game, 8-2.
Barnette led with two hits and two RBI for the Lady Bulldogs. Parker Davis (10-7) took the loss after pitching 1.1 innings and giving up four runs off of four hits with one strikeout. Gabby Morris pitched 2.2 innings in relief giving up three runs off of two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Taylor Manley finished the game pitching two innings giving up one run off of two hits with two walks and one strikeout.
The bats started rolling for the Lady Bulldogs in the second game as Kaitlyn Kelley started the third inning off with an RBI single up the middle. Barnette followed with an RBI of her own to put Union up 2-0. UWG scored four runs in the third to take the lead 4-2 An RBI from Davis scored a third run for Union in the fourth inning. Kelley received another RBI in the seventh to tie the ball game. A single to left field scored West Georgia's final run, winning 5-4.
Sarah Smith led with two hits for the Lady Bulldogs, Kelley led with two RBI. Morris started for the Lady Bulldogs pitching 2.1 innings giving up four runs off of three hits with four walks. Davis (10-8) took the loss giving up one run off of two hits with one strikeout.
A double from Barnette scored Kelley to start the final game of the series. Morris followed with a home run in the second inning to put Union up 2-0. West Georgia scored two runs in the fourth to tie the game, followed by a home run in the fifth to win.
Morris (9-14) took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs after tossing 1.1 innings and giving up one run off of four hits with two strikeouts. Davis pitched 4.2 innings in relief and gave up two runs off of seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Up next for Union is a double header against Lane College on Wednesday, April 24 at 2 p.m.
