Union women's basketball edges past Central State

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Union University women's basketball earned its fifth straight win Saturday night as they beat Central State University 75-69. Union improved to 8-2 on the season, while CSU dropped to 2-8 overall.
 
After a closely played first quarter, Union came away with a five-point lead, 16-11. CSU outscored the Lady Bulldogs 5-1 to open the second quarter and cut the lead to one point. Union responded by outscoring CSU 18-10. The Lady Bulldogs carried their nine-point lead, 35-26, into halftime.

Union extended its lead to as many as 14 points in the third quarter, despite it being its lowest-scoring quarter of the night. The fourth quarter saw Union extend its lead to 16 three different times. CSU outscored Union 31-25 in the fourth quarter and was able to cut the lead to just five points. However, the Lady Bulldogs were able to maintain their lead and secure the win. CSU never led in the game. 

Union was led by Jada Smith and Jaelencia Williams with 24 and 22 points respectively. Williams recorded 14 rebounds while Smith recorded 5. Jacie Higgins added 11 points while Emily Beard scored 8. Caroline Hogue recorded 6 rebounds. Smith also led with 6 assists. Union shot 46 percent from the field, 42 percent (5-12) from long range, and 67 percent (14-21) from the free-throw line.
 
CSU was led by Takyra Gilbert with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Sandra Guilford added 15 points and 4 rebounds. The Lady Marauders shot 36 percent from the field, 27 percent (4-15) from the 3-point line, and 62 percent (13-21) from the foul line.
