Pensecola, Fla. - The Union University women's volleyball team posted a 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 14-25, 15-12) victory at the GSC Tournament to begin the post-season. This was the first ever appearance in the GSC Tournament for Union. With the win Union improved to 21-11 overall. Montevallo ended the season 19-14 on the year and 12-5 in league play after winning their first game of the tournament beating Miss. College 3-0.
The 21 wins for Union is the most for the volleyball program in the NCAA D2 era (2012-present).
Union led Montevallo in kills (54-53) and in blocks (8-5). Montevallo led 51-49 in assists. Union won in digs (79-69).
Union won the first two sets in a back and forth affair but lost the third, 25-23, 25-22, and 22-25. The teams were back and forth the entire time. Through three sets there were 26 tie scores, and 12 lead changes.
In the first set Union led kills 11-8, and in the second set they led kills as well 13-12. In the third set they again, won the kill battle 13-9, however lost the set by a close margin of 25-22. Montevallo won the fourth set by a score of 25-14. In the fourth set Montevallo led in kills 14-8, and service aces 4-1. However, Union did lead in blocks 1-0.
The final set was a back and forth affair, as was the entire match. Montevallo was the first team in the set to grab a lead more than one at 5-7. Montevallo reached the eighth point first with a score of 8-6. Union climbed their way back and led 13-12 late in the fifth, and forced Montevallo to call a timeout. Union grabbed the 14th point with a block by
Laura Rose Gray. Union pulled it out and won by a final of 15-12.
This is Union's first ever GSC Post-season win since joining the conference.
Union was led in kills by
Laura Rose Gray and
Meghan Delaney with 13 kills. Gray also led with five blocks,
Jordan Vick led with 43 assists, and Rahn led with 18 digs.
Up next for Union is the GSC Tournament Semi-Finals against the host #1 seed University of West Florida. That game will be at 2:00 p.m. on November 23, 2019.
