Union men's soccer prepares for GSC tourney

GSC Men's Soccer Championships

CLINTON, Miss. The Union men's soccer team will take on No. 1 seed Mississippi College in the Quarterfinals of the GSC Tournament on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at MC's Robert P. Longabaugh Field. The match marks Union's first-ever appearance in the GSC Tournament in its six years of eligibility.  

Union head coach Steven Cox said "We have a very close knit group of guys that care about each other on and off the field. Our culture is special within our program. This is one of the reasons why we have been able to have the most successful season since Union has been D2 eligible. Our guys are looking forward to competing in the program's first ever GSC Conference Tournament." 

After beginning GSC play 1-4, the Bulldogs won three straight matches to bring them back into playoff contention. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-7 and a GSC record of 5-6 to claim the No. 8 seed in the tournament. 

This season marks the first time Union has finished a season with eight or more wins since 2012 when the team posted an overall record of 13-4-4. 

The last meeting between the Bulldogs and the Choctaws was October 11 in Clinton and resulted in a rain-soaked 3-0 loss for the Bulldogs. The Choctaws are 8-1-5 overall and 7-0-3 in league play. 

Eleven different players have scored for the Bulldogs this season, with seven of those players scoring two or more goals. Nine different players have recorded assists. Union is currently averaging 1.93 goals per game and 11.8 shots per game. 

Sophomore forward Gavin Scott is currently second in GSC rankings in goals (9 total, .600/game) and points (23, 1.53/game). Scott has also recorded five assists. Senior forward William Valencia is currently first in GSC rankings in assists (8 total, .533/game). Valencia has also added two goals. 

The winner of the match will advance to the semifinals on Friday, November 15, in Pensacola, Florida. The winner will face off against the winner of No. 4 see Lee, and No. 5 seed Christian Brothers.
