MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Union University's men's soccer team remained in contention for a spot in the GSC tournament after falling 4-2 to Montevallo Saturday. The Bulldogs are 4-9-1 overall and 2-6-1 in conference play.
The Bulldogs gave themselves an early chance to take control. George McDonnell scored in the fifth minute, and Ashanie Kennedy followed with a goal in the 35th, putting Union up 2-0.
Montevallo cut the lead before halftime. Ian Palma scored in the 41st minute, and the Falcons drew even shortly after the break when Luis Billep scored in the 47th.
Union held the tie for more than 30 minutes, but Montevallo broke through in the 82nd minute. Juan Diego Alfaro Barrantes put the Falcons ahead, and just over a minute later Joaquin Wladdimiro scored again to make it 4-2.
The Bulldogs kept pushing in the closing minutes. Kennedy put two shots on target, but Montevallo goalkeeper Andre Etcheverry turned both away. Etcheverry also saved a shot from McDonnell, and Montevallo's defense stopped Charlie Peters' attempt.
Patrick Schott made eight saves for Union. The Bulldogs finished with 12 shots, nine on goal, and four corner kicks. Montevallo had 22 shots, 12 on goal, and nine corners.
Union remains alive for a GSC tournament spot, but needs to beat Auburn University at Montgomery Friday and get help from other results. The Bulldogs host AUM at 5:30 p.m. at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Admission is free courtesy of FirstBank.
