JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-12) win over Mississippi College Friday night. Union improved to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 6-11 on the season season and 2-3 in league play.

Darrin McClure said, "It is really good to be home for a conference match. We expected a tough battle and we are really thankful to come away with win tonight. We have a lot of players that can get it done. I'm proud of our players can came off the bench and gave us a spark tonight. We mention family and grit a lot tonight becuase we had to stay together tonight. Conference matches are sometimes ugly and hard and we talked about pushing through and we did that tonight to get the win."
Union's
Kristen Bukowsky started the match with a kill and the Lady Bulldogs but the set was back and forth in the early going. Union then used runs of 5-0 and 7-0 to take control and win the first set 25-16.
In the second set, Mississippi College took control early and rushed out to a 19-8 lead. Union then stormed back and tied the set at 22-22. MC scored three of the next four points to even the match.
Union led 3-1 early in the third set, but MC rallied to take the lead. The set went back and forth with the team tied at 12-12. Union scored five of the next six points to lead 18-13. MC chipped away to cut the Union lead to 21-20. Union's
Grace Roberts and
Emily Grace Calhoon each had a kill to put Union up 23-21. MC then tied the set at 23-23. Haley Rasmey's kill gave Union set point at 24-23, but MC scored three straight points, including an ace from Lexie Laurendine to win the set 26-24.
Union again started well with a 3-0 lead in set four, capped by a service ace from
Abbie Rahn. Union maintained a slim lead until back-to-back kills from
Jordan Vick and Delaney forced an MC timeout with Union leading 11-7. Union extended to its largest lead of six points, 20-14, forcing the second MC timeout of the set. Union added two more points to the lead at 22-14, before MC stopped the run. MC scored five of the next six points to cut the Union lead down to 23-19, causing Union to use a timeout. Union scored two of the next three points to tie the match at 2-2.
The fifth set was a third straight fast start for Union, going up 5-1. MC stayed close but Union led 8-5 at the switch. Union extended its lead to 10-6, forcing MC's final timeout. MC took advantage of a kill and an ace to cut the Union lead to 10-8 and make Union call its first timeout. Union stopped the MC run with with two kills from Bukowsky and a net error from MC to lead 13-9. The Lady Bulldogs reached set point at 14-10 following a kill from Delaney. MC stayed alive with two points, but ended the match on a service error, giving Union the 3-2 win.
Both teams at 58 kills in the match with Union hitting .277 to just .171 for MC. Union led 8-6 in aces, but fell way behind with 15 service errors to just six from MC. Union dominated the net 11-4 in blocks and led 84-68 in digs.
Delaney led Union with 16 kills, while Calhoon and Bukoswky added 12 and 10 respectively. Vick led with 39 assists, Rahn with three aces and 29 digs, and Calhoon with five blocks.
Up next for Union will be a GSC road match at West Alabama, October 6 at 3 p.m.
