JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 28-26) win over Valdosta State University Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 15-9 on the season and 7-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State dropped to 10-15 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Union bounced back after a tough loss last night to West Georgia. In the eight sets played over the past two days, five of the eight have finished with scores going over 25 points.
Union dropped the first set 26-24 after leading 22-20. Union had set point at 24-23, but VSU responded with three straight kills to take the 1-0 lead. In the second set, VSU led 5-4 before Union took control with eight of the next 10 points. Union cruised to the 25-17 win. In the third set, the teams were back and forth early. VSU was up 18-17 when Union scored three straight points to take the lead for good. With Union up 21-20, the Lady Bulldogs scored the final four points, including kills from
Emily Grace Calhoon and
Alyssa Tatsch, and an ace from
Kristen Goggin to take the 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was a set of streaks. Union opened the set with a 5-0 lead. After a timeout by VSU the Blazers scored seven straight points to take the lead. After a Union timeout, the Lady Bulldogs scored eight straight points to lead 13-7. VSU rallied again with six straight points to tie the match at 13-13. The teams then went back and forth for the remainder of the set. Union had set point three times, 24-23, and 26-25, before finally taking the win 28-26 on an ace from
Abbie Rahn.
Jordan Vick recorded two big kills from the setter position in the final four points for Union.
Union hit .234 for the match while Valdosta State hit .129. Union led hin kills 56-43, blocks 14-8, and digs 59-54. The teams were even with seven aces each. Union (11) and VSU (8) combined for 19 service errors in the match.
Union was led by
Meghan Delaney with 17 kills while Calhoon added 10 kills. Goggin and Tatsch led with two aces each. Kristen Bukoswky and Calhoon led with six blocks each while
Haley Ramsey tallied five blocks. Vick dished out 39 assists and Rahn led with 22 digs.
Up next for Union will be a pair of GSC road matches Nov. 1 and 2. The first stop is GSC leader West Florida.
