Union men's soccer notch third straight GSC win with overtime thriller versus Shorter

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 2-1 double overtime win over Shorter University at Smith Soccer Complex. Union improved to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 4-7-2 on the season and 0-5-2 in league play. 

The win for Union marked its third straight GSC win. Union has vaulted into a tie for third place in the league standings with just three GSC games left this season. The top-8 in the league advance to the GSC Tournament. Union is looking for its first trip to the GSC Tournament since becoming eligible in 2014. 

The first half was scoreless with Shorter edging Union 7-4 in shots. Shorter again edged Union in shots in the second half, 11-9. Union was finally able to break through when Gavin Scott scored on an assists from William Valencia in the 48th minute. 

Shorter responded almost immediately with a matching tying goal by Val Evens in the 53 minute to even the score. Regulation ended with the match tied 1-1. 

Union dominated the overtime period in shots, 6-1, including 3-1 in the first overtime. Neither team scored, pushing the match to a second overtime. Then with just under four minutes remaining, Union's Felipe Firmino scored the game-winner for the Bulldogs. 

Up next for Union will be a road game at the University of Alabama Huntsville, Friday, October 25 at 5 p.m.
