JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team earned their second GSC win in a row with a 3-2 win over Lee University on Friday. The win saw Union improve to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Lee is now 6-4-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the GSC.
Union freshman
Mats Fredriksen opened the scoring with his first career goal in the 23rd minute of the match,
William Valencia had the assist.
In the 36th minute, the Flames tied it up with an unassisted goal from Jared McWhorter. The Bulldogs responded just one minute later with a goal from
James Jackson (his third of the season), assisted by
William Valencia and
Gavin Scott. Valencia now has a team-high five assists on the season. Valencia also leads the GSC in assists per game (.500).
The score remained 2-1 heading into halftime. Lee led 9-6 in shots and 4-3 in shots on goal in the first half.
Valencia wasn't done for the night as he added a goal of his own in the 56th minute.
David Hurtado earned his first assist of the season on the play.
The Bulldogs were unable to maintain their two-goal lead, as the Flames scored with just 51 seconds left in the match. Valencia's goal was his second of the season and his first game-winner.
Lee outshot Union 22-14 throughout the game, including 9-6 shots on goal. Union goalkeeper
Euan Morton recorded 6 saves on the night, playing all 90 minutes.
Union now sits in a three-way tie for fifth place in the GSC with nine points as they head into their final four conference games of the season. The top eight teams make the conference tournament.
