Union volleyball sweeps Shorter 3-0

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) victory over Shorter University Friday night. The win marked the Bulldogs third straight win in Gulf South Conference play, improving to 5-1 in the GSC and 11-7 overall. 

Head coach Darrin McClure said "A 3-0 win, we're excited about that. A lot of our conference matches are really close. The last two we played were five-set wins. We're glad that our girls could put it together tonight, Shorter is a good team." 

The first set was tightly played with four lead changes and neither team leading by more than three points. In the second set Union jumped ahead to a 16-7 lead before dropping five straight points. The Bulldogs responded with three straight points of their own to make the lead 19-12 before cruising to a 25-17. Shorter led by as many as six points in the third set and saw its last lead of the game at 21-16. Union outscored the Hawks 9-1 to win the final set.  

In the win over Shorter, Union hit .179, leading in kills 38-35. Union led 8-5 in blocks, 70-59 in digs, while Shorter led in aces 4-3. Meghan Delaney led with 13 kills, while Emily Grace Calhoon added 8, and Alyssa Tatsch added 7. Delaney, Calhoon, and Sydney Sample each had one ace. Laura Rose Gray led with 4 blocks, while Delaney and Calhoon each added 3. Jordan Vick led with 29 assists, and Abbie Rahn led with 23 digs. 

Up next for Union volleyball is a home GSC match against Lee, Saturday, October 12 at 2 p.m.
