JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team defeated the University of Alabama in Huntsville 99-75 on Saturday afternoon in Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 8-6 and 3-3 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH dropped to 9-4 and 2-3 in conference
play.
JC Hawkins put the Bulldogs ahead early in the game by scoring nine of Union's first 11 points. UAH closed the gap to one point three times, but the Bulldogs held on to the lead for a majority of the first half. With 5:03 left to play in the first half, the Chargers began a 8-0 run to take the lead at 38-34. Union ended the half with a dunk by Tylandrius Parks to tie the game at 43.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 24-3 run that included five three-pointers from Terrandus Smith, Hawkins, and Payton Stovall. The Chargers went on a 10-0 run at the 12:03 mark, but Union held on to the lead the rest of the game. A layup by Tevin Florent gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game with just under a minute to play at 99-72.
The final score was 99-75.
The Bulldogs scored 18 three-pointers as a team, making this the fourth most three-pointers made in a game in Union men's basketball history.
Smith led the Bulldogs with 22 points. Hawkins had a career night with 21 points, including 7-10 from long range. Parks added 18 points and led the team in assists with 6 and rebounds with 10. Stovall also had 18 points on the night, going 6-8 from three-point range. The Bulldogs were 56 percent from the field, 51 percent (18-35) from long range, and 62 percent (5-8) from the foul line.
Union out-rebounded UAH 40-19, with Union committing 8 turnovers and UAH committing 7 turnovers.
UAH was led by JJ Kaplan was 20 points and seven rebounds. Malik Cooke-Stroupe had 16 points, and Dalton Barkley had 13 points. The Chargers were 50 percent from the field, 40 percent (9-22) from three-point range, and 66 percent (6-9) from the foul line.
