MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Union University men's basketball team defeated Auburn University at Montgomery Thursday night, 95-79. Union improved to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the Gulf South Conference. AUM dropped to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in conference.
With the win, Union sweeps the season series versus AUM after a 95-74 win at Union December 13.
Union shot 61 percent from the field and 42 percent (5-12) from long range in the first half. Union was 50 percent from the field from both the field and 3-point range (4-8) in the second half. Union drained 20-of-24 free throws for 83 percent in the game.
Tylandrius Parks started the game for Union with a layup. Union quickly pushed the lead to 9-2 when Parks capped the run with another layup. AUM fought back and took its first lead of the night, 17-16 with 11:14 left in the first half. The Warhawks led by as many as three points a few times, before a 3-pointer from JC Clausi tied the game 22-22. Union took the lead for good on the next possession when Samory Gueye hit a layup. Union's lead hit double figures for the first time when Payton Stovall's 3-pointer with 4:41 left put Union up 37-26. Union led by as many as 15 points in the first half, before taking a 48-34 lead into the half.
In the second half, Union had its lead cut to six points after AUM opened the half with an 8-0 run. AUM got as close as four points, 50-46, with 16:13 left in the game. But Union quickly responded with a 10-1 run to get the lead back to double figures. Union kept the double figure lead for the rest of the night, leading by as many as 17 points twice.
Union had five players in double digits, led by Bryson Butler with 21 points and eight rebounds. Terrandus Smith had 17 points, and Payton Stovall added in 14 points. Samory Gueye had 11 points, and Tylandrius Parks had 10 points. The Bulldogs were 55 percent from the field and 45 percent (9-20) for the game.
AUM was led by Carlos Bell with 25 points. Aaron Reddick had 17 points, and Stanley Davis had 13 points. The Warhawks were 42 percent from the field, 31 percent (6-19) from long range, and 82 percent (19-23) from the foul line.
Union out-rebounded AUM 35-32. Union committed 12 turnovers, forcing 15 from AUM.
