Union men's basketball lose close game to UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of West Alabama 57-60 on Saturday night. The  Bulldogs dropped to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play. West Alabama improved to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in league play. 

West Alabama took the lead early, but Union went on a 10-0 run to put the Bulldogs up 16-12. The Tigers stayed within five points through the rest of the half, but Union the first half with a three-point lead, 28-25. West Alabama took back the lead at the beginning of the second half, but Union tied the score five times before taking back the lead with 4:10 left to play. The Tigers responded with a three-pointer from Lajuan Hardy, but Terrandus Smith gave the Bulldogs their last lead of the game at 55-54. West Alabama secured the win with an 8-2 run with 1:44 left to play, making the final score 62-57. 

Union was led by Bryson Butler 12 points and six assists. Smith had 11 points and eight rebounds. The Bulldogs were 38 percent from the field, 42 percent (6-14) from long range, and 57 percent (15-26) from the foul line. 

West Alabama was led by Josh Fleming with 17 points. Ricky Dunnaway had 14 points, and Hardy had 12 points. The Tigers were 43 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from long range, and 58 percent (10-17) from the foul line. 

West Alabama out-rebounded Union 36-34. Union committed 11 turnovers, forcing 12 from UWA. 

Next up for Union is a pair of home games, first is against Delta State on Thursday night and Mississippi College on Saturday.
