Union women get road win at West Georgia 49-42

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 49-42 win at the University of West Georgia Thursday evening. Union, ranked No. 7 in the WBCA Coaches' poll and No. 8 in the D2SIDA Media poll, improved to 18-1 overall and 10-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 10-6 on the season and 5-5 in league play. 

Union remains in at least a tie for first place in the GSC. 

The two teams played a low scoring first quarter with Union clinging to a 9-7 lead. Both team scored 11 points in the second quarter, giving Union a 20-18 lead at the break. 

In the third quarter, West Georgia opened with seven straight points to lead 25-20 with 5:21 left. Union finally got its first basket on a jumper from Jada Perkins with 5:08 left. Union rallied and following a couple of free throws from Avree Carpenter, Union lead briefly, 28-27, with 3:34 left. The teams swapped leads on the next two possessions, before the Wolves matched their largest lead of five points, 38-33, by the end of the quarter. West Georgia outscored Union 20-13 in the third. 

Union rallied back again with an 8-2 run over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to take the lead for good. Union pushed its lead to as may as seven points, 47-70 with a minute left. Union outscored West Georgia 16-4 in the fourth quarter to get the important road win. 

Union was led by Morgan Martin with 15 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. She scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half. Perkins scored 11 points with seven rebound and six assists. With her six rebounds, Perkins surpassed 600 career rebounds. She is also now just 10 assists shy of 600. Union shot 39 percent from the field, 20 percent (2-10) from 3-point range, and 82 percent (9-11) from the free throw line. 

West Georgia was led by Jessica Brown with 10 points and A'Kia Harris with nine points and 11 rebounds. The Wolves shot 35 percent from the field, 14 percent (2-14) from long range, and 44 percent (4-9) from the foul line. 

West Georgia edged Union 33-32 in rebounds, while Union committed two less turnovers, 15-17.
