Union women shoot past MC 90-61

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 90-61 win over Mississippi College Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union, ranked No. 7 in the WBCA Poll and No. 9 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 17-1 overall and 9-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 6-9 on the season and 2-7 in league play. 

Union's Jada Smith needed just nine points to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career. She ended the game 18 points, including 10 in the second half. 

Union scored the first nine points of the game before Mississippi College hit a 3-pointer at the 7:27 mark. By the end of the quarter, Union had extended its lead to as many as 18 points, 27-9. 

In the second quarter, Mississippi College used a 14-2 run, including 12 straight points to get as close as six points, 29-23, with six minutes left. Union pushed the lead back to 11 points at the half, 39-28. 

In the third quarter, Union's lead grew to 21 points, 55-34, with 4:49 left. Again, MC made a run to cut the lead to 10 points, 60-50, with 1:07 left in the third. However, the Lady Bulldog dominated the fourth quarter, extending their largest lead of 29 points, the 90-61 final. 

Union shot well in the first, third, and fourth quarters, hitting over 50 percent from the field and scoring 27, 25, and 26 respectively. Union was outscored 19-12 in the second quarter. 

Union was led by Tiffany Rechis with a career-high 22 points including six 3-pointers. Smith added her 18 points to put her at 1,009 points for her career. Morgan Martin scored 15, while Jada Perkins added a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists. Deja Graves scored 10 points. Perkins added four rebounds and is now just three shy of 600 for her career. 

Union shot 52 percent from the field, 36 percent (11-31) from 3-point range, and 88 percent (7-8) from the free throw line. 

Mississippi College was led by Coco Hobson with 19 points and Jamilah Sanders with 10 points. The Choctaws shot 36 percent from the field, 33 percent (6-18) from long range, and 79 percent (11-14) from the foul line.
