PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Union University women's soccer team was defeated at No. 4 University of West Florida 8-1. Union dropped to 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in Gulf South Conference play. West Florida improved to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
The Argonauts struck early in the fifth minute with a goal Deneisha Blackwood assisted by Kayla Douglas. In less than a minute, West Florida's Grace Busby put another goal in the back of the net unassisted.
West Florida added two more goals before the end of the half. UWF led 4-0 at the half and outshot Union 24-0.
At the beginning of the second half, Union's defense let in an own goal.
Freshman, Emie Peterson scored her first career goal to put Union on the board in the 51st minute, making the score 5-1.
The Argonauts added three more goals before the end of the match. The final score was 8-1. West Florida outshot Union 32-2 in the game, including 18-1 in shots on goal. UWF led in corner kicks 15-2 and the fouls were even at eight apiece.
Union was led by Peterson and Anna Barkey with one shot apiece.
Anna Venkus was in goal for Union for 67 minutes and recorded nine saves. Karleigh Belnap recorded 23 minutes in goal with one save.
