JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team lost the conference opener Christian Brothers University 3-2 (18-25, 27-25, 25-14,21-25, 15-8) Tuesday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 3-11 overall and 0-1 in the GSC. The Lady Bucs improved 6-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
In the first set, the Lady Bulldogs tied it at four before hedging out two more points to take their first lead of the set. Union continued to lead until Christian Brothers tied the score at 12. Union took over the rest of the set, never trailing to a 25-18 win.
The second set was another battle between the two teams. Meghan Delaney's ace put Union up 16-11, forcing CBU to take a timeout. The Lady Bucs came roaring out of the timeout with five straight points to tie the set, forcing Union to take a timeout of their own. Christian Brothers won the set, 27-25.
Christian Brothers controlled the third set forcing Union into a timeout after the Lady Bucs jumped out to an eight-point lead. CBU scored the last seven points of the set ending it at 25-14.
The fourth set was back-and-forth all the way to a 20-20 tie. Union then scored five of the final six points of the set to win 25-21.
Christian Brothers jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the fifth set, then extended the lead to 14-2. Union scored six straight points, but it was not enough to overcome CBU's fast start.
Union was led by Delaney with 17 digs, Delaney Peterson with six blocks, and seven players with five kills each.
Up next for Union is the seventh of eight straight home games, Friday, September 14 against the University of Motevallo at 7 p.m.
