MARTIN, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team lost 3-2 at the University of Tennessee at Martin Monday night. The match was a makeup match that was postponed from Saturday due to stormy weather. Union dropped to 0-2 on the season, while UT Martin improved to 5-2 overall.
UT Martin scored all three goals in the first half, with each coming in a span of just under eight minutes. The first came in the 24th minute on when Union helped the Skyhawks with an own-goal after a defender failed to clear the ball. UT Martin used that momentum to add to the lead with a second goal in the 30th minute. The third and final goal for the Skyhawks came in the 32nd minute. Union trailed 3-0 at the half and was outshot 20-0 in the first half.
Neither team scored for the first 33 minutes of the second half. Union finally got on the board in the 79th minute on a goal from Alice Nelson on a long shot from 30 yards out. Five minutes later, Austen DeLoach added Union's second goal on a one-on-one shot. Despite the 2-0 goal advantage for Union in the second half, UT Martin outshot Union 22-3 in the final 45 minutes of play.
UT Martin outshot Union 42-3 in the game, including 14-2 in shots on goal. UT Martin also dominated the corners, six kicks to none. The fouls were even at two each.
Victoria Lucido added the only other shot for Union. Anna Venckus spent all 90 minutes in goal, recording 14 saves.
Up next for Union will be another tough test when the Lady Bulldogs open Gulf South Conference play at No. 7 West Florida Friday.
