Union softball swept by No. 23 Alabama Huntsville

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team was swept by No. 23 University of Alabama in Huntsville. Union fell in game one on Friday, 5-2. Huntsville took game two 7-2 and the final game 6-1. Union is now 16-29 on the season and 7-22 in the Gulf South Conference. Huntsville is now 31-12 overall and 21-8 in conference play. 

Both teams scored a run in the first inning on Friday. Huntsville took the lead in the second inning and scored two more runs in the third on a home run. A single by Haley Barnette in the third scored another run for Union, but the Lady Bulldogs were unable to score again. Huntsville scored in the seventh inning to make the final, 5-2. Union was led by Barnette with three hits and two RBI. Gabby Morris (11-10) tossed 6.2 innings giving up six hits and five earned runs with six walks and three strikeouts. Taylor Manley pitched a third of an inning in relief with no hits and no runs. 

Huntsville started game two of the series in the top of the third inning with an RBI double. Sarah Smith scored Union's first run of the game in the bottom of the frame that was followed by an RBI single from Emily Bennett. The bats exploded for Huntsville in the fourth with two doubles and a home run to go up 5-2. Huntsville hit two more home runs in the fifth and seventh inning to finish the game, 7-2. Union had five players with one hit each in the game, Mathis and Bennett had an RBI each. Parker Davis (0-8) tossed 3.1 innings for the Lady Bulldogs giving up six hits and four runs with one strikeout. Manley pitched .2 innings giving up four hits and two runs. Taylor Griffith pitched three innings in relief giving up three hits and one run with one walk. 

In the final game, an RBI single from Samantha McDaniel scored Union's only run of the game. Huntsville jumped on the ball in the third scoring five runs including and 3-run homer. Huntsville scored their final run in the top of the fourth. Union was led by McDaniel with two hits and one RBI. Morris (11-11) tossed 2.2 innings giving up four hits and five earned runs with four walks and one strikeout. Griffith finished the ball game pitching 4.1 innings giving up two hits and one run with one walk and two strikeouts. 

Up next for Union is a double header against Lane College Tuesday, April 24 starting at 3 p.m.
