LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University softball team won one game of three against the University of West Alabama. UWA defeated the Lady Bulldogs Sunday, 3-1. On Monday, Union won 7-0 in the first game, but lost 3-10 to West Alabama in the second game. The Lady Bulldogs are now 16-26 on the season and 7-19 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama is now 18-26 overall and 10-17 in conference.
Union won the first game of the double header Monday, 7-0. Union scored six runs in the first inning.
Samantha McDaniel started the inning off with a home run over the left field wall. Two runs scored after McDaniel on an error by the first baseman. Back-to-back doubles by
Peyton Mathis and
Parker Davis scored two more runs and finally a triple from
Abbie Page scored Union's sixth run of the inning. The final run of the game was scored in the seventh inning by an RBI single from
Haley Barnette.
Union was led by Page with two hits and Barnette with three RBI.
Gabby Morris (10-9) tossed a complete game for Union giving up six hits and no runs with seven walks and seven strikeouts.
Union scored the first run of the third game by a double from Barnette to score Morris. UWA hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the frame to go up by one run. West Alabama scored two more runs in the third inning to jump ahead 4-1. Barnette hit a homer in the fourth inning to bring Union within two runs. It was in the bottom of fourth that UWA exploded with five runs to go up 9-2. Another home run by Barnette in the sixth scored Union's third and final run of the game. West Alabama hit their own homer in the bottom of the sixth to win, 10-3.
Union was led by Barnette with three hits and three RBI.
Taylor Manley (2-6) received the loss for Union tossing 2.2 innings and giving up two hits and three earned runs with one walk.
Parker Davis pitched .2 innings for Union giving up two hits and four earned runs with one walk.
Taylor Griffith pitched 2.2 innings in relief and gave up four hits and three earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
In Sunday's game, West Alabama scored first in the first inning with a single to center field. Morris hit a home run over the right field fence to score Union's only run of the ball game. West Alabama scored two final runs in the fifth inning.
Union was led by Morris with two hits and one RBI. Morris (9-9) also pitched a complete game for Union tossing six innings and giving up four hits and two earned runs with two walks and six strikeouts.
Up next for Union is a three game conference series against the University of Alabama in Huntsville at the Fesmire Softball Field beginning on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m.
