Union softball suffers series sweep at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University softball team was swept in a 3-game weekend series at Mississippi College. MC won both games Friday evening 9-1 and rallied to win 8-7 in game two. MC then on the Saturday game 8-0. Union dropped to 11-21 overall and at 5-15 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College improved to 19-11 on the season and 12-8 in league play. 

In the first game Friday, MC scored twice in the first and five times in the second to lead 7-0. Union got a run in the third when Samantha McDaniel singled in Emily Bennett. Two more Choctaw runs in the third set the score at 9-1, shortening the game to five innings. McDaniel's hit was the only hit of the game for Union. Taylor Griffith (3-3) took the loss. 

Friday's game two started with Union getting two runs in the first. A bases loaded sacrifice bunt form Haley Barnette, and later in the inning, Gabby Morris scored on the throw of a caught stealing. MC answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Union then exploded for five runs in the second to take a 7-1 lead. RBI singles from Abbie Page, Morris, and Sarah Smith helped spark the big inning. However, MC scored seven unanswered runs, scoring in every inning of the game except the fourth. MC tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth and then won the game with a run in the seventh. Union was out hit 10-5 in the game. Morris led with two hits and two RBI. Taylor Manley (1-4) took the loss. 

Game three was all MC as the Choctaws out hit Union 8-4 on their way to an 8-0 win in five innings. MC got four runs in the second, three in the third, and clinched the win with a run in the fifth. Bennett led with two hits. Manley took the loss for Union. 

Up next for Union is a road double-header at LeMoyne-Owen, Wednesday, April 4 at 1 p.m.
