Union softball splits double-header versus Delta State

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team split a double-header versus Delta State University to open the 3-game series. Union lost the first game 3-1, before taking the second game 3-2 in eight innings. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-22 overall and 6-16 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State is now 22-17 and 13-10 in conference play.

The win in game two snapped a nine game winning streak for Delta State

Union trailed 2-0 in the second game after Delta State scored twice in the first inning. Union then got a 2-run home run from Samantha McDaniel in the bottom of the third inning. The scored stayed 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth. McDaniel doubled with one out, followed by an Emily Bennett walk. The two runners then moved up on a wild pitch. Gabby Morris hit a slow roller to the left side of the infield and McDaniel beat the throw home for the winning run. McDaniel and Bennett led with two hits, while McDaniel led with two RBI. Morris (8-7) earned the win, tossing a complete game with five hits, two runs and seven strikeouts. 

Delta State scored first in the game with a solo home run rom Kaitlyn Eaves in the fourth inning. The scored stayed 1-0 until Delta State scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Union's only run came in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Peyton Mathis. Samantha McDaniel led Union with two hits. Taylor Manley (1-5) took the loss for Union after pitching six innings giving up three runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Gabby Morris pitched in relief for the Lady Bulldogs tossing one inning and giving up one hit with one strikeout.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series Monday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
