ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Union University softball team earned a double-header split at Maryville University, winning 7-4 in game one and falling 13-4 in game two. Union is now 11-17 overall, while Maryville is 15-13-1.
In game one, Maryville scored first with three unearned runs in the first, followed by a fourth run in the second inning to lead 4-0. The scored stayed 4-0 until Union put up seven runs in the fifth inning. And RBI double from Samantha McDaniel and a 3-run double from Haley Barnette did most of the damage in the inning. The 7-4 score stood as the final. Union was led by McDaniel and Parker Davis with two hits each. Barnette led with three RBI. Union out-hit Maryville 8-7. Taylor Griffith started for Union, tossing one inning, allowing four runs, but only one earned run, on four hits. Gabby Morris (7-7) tossed the final six innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Game two started with Maryville getting six runs in the first inning, three of which were unearned runs. Union answered with two runs in the second, both unearned. A solo home run in the bottom of the second inning from Maryville extended the lead to 7-2. The Saints got six more runs in the third on a bases clearing double, followed by a 2-RBI single, and a bases loaded walk, to lead 13-2. Union added two runs in the fourth inning, with one run coming on an RBI single from Davis. But Maryville prevailed 13-4 in the five inning game. Maryville out hit Union 13-4 in the win. Union had one hit each from four different player. Taylor Manley (1-2) started and earned the loss. Three other pitchers entered in relief for Union in the game.
Up next for Union will be a weekend conference series at Mississippi College, Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31. Friday's games are at 4 and 6 p.m., while Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m.
