Union baseball wins 7-5 at Montevello, takes series

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Union University baseball team posted a 7-5 victory at the University of Montevallo in game three of the weekend. Union split the double-header with Montevallo on Friday, wining 18-5 in game one and falling 12-1. Union is now 7-14 overall and 3-6 in the Gulf South Conference play. Montevallo is now 14-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play. 

This for Union win marked the 600th career victory in his 25th season for head coach Lee Driggers.

Union jumped out 1-0 in the first inning with a run from David Robins. Union scored two more runs in the second inning when Caleb DeMarigny and Zane Phillips both scored on passed balls from the catcher. Montevallo answered with a run of their own in the third to get on the board. Union scored again in the third on an RBI from Phillips, driving in Robins. It was three up three down for the Bulldogs in the fourth and the fifth, but Montevallo was able to score another run in the fifth. An RBI bunt from Charlie Ellis scored DeMarigny in the sixth and neither team scored again until the ninth. A home run from Jesse Kelley started the last inning for the Bulldogs and an RBI from Nolen Milton scored Hayden Lewis, Union's last run. Montevallo scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth with no outs. However Pollard was able to strike out the final three batters to end the game.

Montevallo out-hit Union 10-9, and left 11 runners on base. Skyler Harrison (1-4) earned his first win on the season allowing two runs, only one earned in 4.1 innings with one strikeout and six hits. Sam McMillin relieved Harrison by pitching two thirds of an inning, allowing no runs, one strike out and two walks. Luis Larrinaga pitched 3.0 innings for the Bulldogs, allowing two earned runs on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Kory Pollard finished the game tossing one inning allowing one earned run off two hits with three strikeouts.

Up next for the Bulldogs is a home game, Tuesday, March 13 versus the University of Tennessee at Martin at 6 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
